What a California Home Care License Means

In California, any company that sends caregivers into homes for non-medical care must be licensed as a Home Care Organization by the California Department of Social Services. Better Choice Care holds this license (HCO #374700466).

To keep the license, a home care organization must follow state rules for its caregivers, its insurance, and its records. The state can review and inspect licensed organizations.

Required by California

As a Licensed Agency, We:

  • Hold a Home Care Organization license from CDSS
  • Use caregivers listed on the California Home Care Aide Registry
  • Require DOJ and FBI background clearance before assignment
  • Provide required orientation and training before assignment
  • Employ caregivers as W-2 employees, not contractors
Protection for Your Family

Bonded and Insured

California requires licensed home care organizations to carry the following coverage, and we do.

Workers’ Compensation

Covers our caregivers if they are hurt on the job, so your family is not responsible for a caregiver’s injury in your home.

Liability Insurance

General and professional liability insurance in the amounts California requires for licensed home care organizations.

Employee Dishonesty Bond

A bond, including third-party coverage, that helps protect clients in the rare case of theft or dishonesty by an employee.

Agency vs. Private Hire

Why This Matters

When you hire a caregiver privately, you may become their employer. That can mean handling payroll, taxes, insurance, and background checks yourself. With a licensed agency, those responsibilities stay with the agency.
