Home Care for Veterans in San Diego
A VA benefit may help pay for help at home
Some veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, a monthly payment added to a VA pension. It can help families pay for non-medical care at home. We’ll explain the basics and connect you with free, accredited help to apply.
What Is Aid and Attendance?
A monthly payment the VA adds to a VA pension for veterans and surviving spouses who need extra help.
Help Paying for Care at Home
Aid and Attendance is for veterans and surviving spouses who receive, or qualify for, a VA pension and need help with daily life.
Families can use it to help pay for in-home care, like help with bathing, dressing, and meals. See the full details on VA.gov.
Care Needs the VA Looks At
Along with VA pension rules, a person must meet at least one of these needs:
- Needs another person to help with daily activities like bathing, eating, or dressing
- Must stay in bed, or spends a large part of the day in bed, because of illness
- Is a nursing home patient because of lost mental or physical abilities related to a disability
- Has very limited eyesight, as defined by the VA
The VA also has a separate Housebound allowance. You can’t get Aid and Attendance and Housebound at the same time. VA pension itself has service, age or disability, income, and net worth rules.

Veterans Questions
Does the VA pay Better Choice Care directly?
No. Aid and Attendance is paid by the VA to the veteran or surviving spouse. Families then use it however they choose, including to pay for in-home care. Our services are private pay.
Can you fill out my VA application?
No. Under VA rules, only VA-accredited representatives, agents, or attorneys can help prepare and file VA claims. We’ll connect you with the county’s accredited representatives, who help at no cost.
Can a surviving spouse qualify?
Yes, surviving spouses who receive, or qualify for, a VA survivors pension may be eligible for Aid and Attendance if they meet the care needs.
How long does the VA take to decide?
The VA does not give a fixed timeline. Many families start care while they wait. We’ll explain our rates and schedule during a free consultation.
