Respite Care in San Diego
Scheduled non-medical support for family caregivers
Short-term help with personal care, meals, companionship, and familiar routines while a family caregiver rests, works, attends appointments, or handles personal responsibilities.
Support for Family Caregivers
Respite care gives a family caregiver scheduled time away while a caregiver follows the written service plan and familiar daily routine.
Non-Medical Help at Home
Support may include personal care, simple meal preparation, companionship, light housekeeping, routine reminders, and everyday assistance identified in the written service plan.
Taking time for rest, appointments, work, or personal responsibilities is a normal and important part of family caregiving.
Flexible Scheduled Support
Families may request a recurring schedule or an occasional daytime visit, subject to caregiver availability.
Services are adjusted to the individual’s documented non-medical needs, preferences, routine, and agreed schedule.
When Families Request Respite Care
Respite care can provide planned support for recurring schedules or occasional daytime needs.
- Regularly scheduled time for rest or personal activities
- Medical, dental, or other personal appointments
- Work commitments or personal errands
- Family events and community activities
- Time with a spouse, children, or friends
- A planned daytime break from caregiving responsibilities
- Temporary help when another family caregiver is unavailable
- Additional support during a demanding family schedule
Scheduling depends on caregiver availability, the requested tasks, and whether the individual’s needs are appropriate for non-medical home care.

Respite Care Questions
How many hours of respite care can I request?
Families may request a daytime visit or a longer daytime block on a recurring schedule or for an occasional need. Scheduling is subject to caregiver availability, applicable minimums, and the written service plan.
Will we have the same caregiver for recurring visits?
We aim for caregiver consistency for recurring schedules, but a specific caregiver cannot be guaranteed and remains subject to availability.
Can respite care support someone living with dementia?
Non-medical respite care may be appropriate depending on the requested tasks and service needs. Matching may consider relevant caregiver experience, communication preferences, and familiar routines.
Can caregivers provide medication reminders?
Caregivers may provide verbal reminders according to the written service plan. They do not administer, organize, manage, or make decisions about medications.
Is respite care covered by insurance or another program?
Coverage varies by policy and program. Contact your insurer, the VA, or the applicable program directly to confirm eligibility and benefits. Better Choice Care LLC does not determine eligibility or guarantee reimbursement.
