Caregiver Questions
The things applicants ask us most often, answered before you apply.
Do I need a California Home Care Aide registration?
Yes — before you can be assigned to a client. But you do not need it to apply. If you are not registered yet, tell us where you are in the process on the application and we will explain the steps. Registration is handled through the California Department of Social Services.
Are caregivers employees or independent contractors?
Better Choice Care caregivers are W-2 employees, not independent contractors. We handle payroll and withholding rather than issuing you a 1099 at the end of the year. It is worth asking this of any organization you apply to, because the answer changes how you are paid and what protections apply to you.
Do I need previous caregiving experience?
Prior caregiving experience is preferred, not required. Also preferred: CPR and First Aid, current Home Care Aide registration or prior non-medical home care work, and experience supporting clients living with dementia or reduced mobility. What is required is that you are eligible to work in the United States, able to complete background screening, communicate reliably, and perform the essential functions of assigned care with or without reasonable accommodation.
What hours are available, and can I work part time?
Part-time and full-time opportunities may be available depending on current client needs. Schedules are built around specific client assignments rather than fixed shifts, so put your real availability on the application — the days, the shift times, and the hours per week you are looking for. Being specific helps us match you to an assignment that fits rather than one you would have to turn down.
What would I actually be doing day to day?
Companionship and social engagement, assistance with bathing, grooming and dressing, non-medical walking and transfer assistance according to the service plan, simple meal preparation, light housekeeping and laundry, and reminders and support with daily routines. You also report observations or concerns back to the office — without assessing or diagnosing anything.
Is this a medical role?
No. This is a non-medical caregiving position. Caregivers do not provide nursing care, clinical assessments, medication administration, therapy, wound care, injections, or other skilled medical services. If a client’s needs move beyond that scope, you raise it with the office rather than handling it yourself.
Where would I be working?
In clients’ homes across San Diego County. Our office is in Rancho Bernardo, and assignments are most often in Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, Poway, Scripps Ranch and Escondido. Tell us which areas you can reasonably drive to and we will keep that in mind when matching.
What happens after I submit my application?
Three steps. You submit the application — about two minutes — telling us your availability, experience and credentials. Qualified applicants are contacted by our local team to discuss the role and next steps. Selected candidates then complete required screening and onboarding before assignment consideration. Our team reviews every application.
